Gaurav Undirwade
Gaurav Undirwade is not just the author of Why Navodayans Are Special — he is someone who has lived the Navodaya spirit deeply for more than 16 years. A proud Navodayan himself, Gaurav believes that Navodaya is far more than a school system. It is an emotion, a lifelong family, and a bond that continues long after the farewell ceremony.
Through this book, he has attempted to capture the memories, emotions, struggles, friendships, values, and life-changing experiences that make every Navodayan feel connected — no matter where they are in the world.
Rather than presenting himself as extraordinary, Gaurav describes himself as “an average Navodayan with an uncommon passion for connecting Navodayans together.”
A Journey Built Around the Navodaya Community
Over the years, Gaurav has dedicated his time, energy, and creativity toward building stronger connections within the Navodaya community across India.

Building One of the Most Active Navodaya Communities
He managed a large Navodaya-focused online community page for years, creating and sharing more than 2,800 posts dedicated to Navodayan memories, stories, achievements, and engagement.
Organising Grand Alumni Gatherings
Along with fellow Navodayans, Gaurav co-organised large alumni reunions that brought together hundreds of JNV alumni, teachers, principals, and faculty members. One such major gathering in Nagpur welcomed over 250+ alumni and 80+ teachers and faculty members, creating unforgettable moments of reconnection.
Founder of “Navodaya.me”
Gaurav founded Navodaya.me, one of the earliest platforms focused on Navodayan merchandise and community identity. The initiative introduced customised Navodaya-themed products such as T-shirts, mugs, and diaries that allowed Navodayans to proudly celebrate their identity.
Supporting Students Beyond School
Over the years, he has personally guided many Navodayan juniors in areas such as:
- College admissions
- Career direction
- Personal growth
- Confidence building
- Professional branding
He has also quietly supported several students financially during their college years, choosing to help anonymously without seeking recognition.
Creating Spaces for Real Human Connection
Gaurav strongly believes that the strength of Navodaya lies in its people and relationships.
From hosting small house gatherings for Navodayans to welcoming hundreds of JNVians into his personal space over the years, his efforts have always revolved around one simple idea:
“Navodayans should never feel alone after leaving Navodaya.”
He has also contributed to Navodaya community events and foundations through event branding, presentations, creative direction, and community-building initiatives.
Preserving Memories That Matter
One of Gaurav’s most personal treasures is a collection of autograph books and memories gathered from hundreds of Navodayans over the years — a reflection of how deeply he values human connection and shared experiences.
His passion for preserving Navodaya memories eventually became the foundation for Why Navodayans Are Special.
The book is not written as an outsider observing the Navodaya system.
It is written by someone who has lived it, protected it, celebrated it, and carried it in his heart for years.
